This small painting was done on Homestake Pass, in the Boulder Batholith country east of Butte, MT. A single tree has taken root at the base of a large granite outcrop, growing up in the shadow of stones far older than itself. There is a bright opening in the distance, but the tree holds its ground in the shade. It was an inspiring scene.
